Technical deep-dive: optimizing QR for reliable scanning
Reliable scans follow physics: distance, contrast, module density, and print quality. Use the rules below before you print.
Size formula
Rule of thumb: code side ≈ scan distance / 10. At 100 cm, plan about 10 cm of matrix plus a quiet zone. For windows and banners, add margin — people rarely hold the phone perfectly square.
Contrast
Dark modules on a light background remain the most camera-stable. Light-on-dark inversion fails on many devices. Avoid low contrast, gradients under the matrix, and glossy laminates that create glare.
Error correction L/M/Q/H
Levels L→H add redundancy: the code survives damage but gets denser. Clean print often needs only M; logos in the center or worn carriers may need Q/H plus a larger physical size. On generate-qr-code.net pick the level for the scenario, not “maximum always.”
SVG scales cleanly for press work; PNG fits screens and quick layouts. Keep the quiet zone, do not squeeze the code into a narrow column, and confirm the press raster does not crush modules.
Testing
Scan with 2–3 phones, at varied distance and angle, in shade and bright light. If the URL must change after print without a new run, use a dynamic code on QRcode Global.
